ALDI staff have been forced to write warning notes on ice cream for dogs to stop their dozy owners tucking in.

The retail giant had to remind shoppers its four-pack of Doggy Ice Cream tubs was “for dogs only” after a string of complaints from customers about the taste.

Some in-store signs for the £3 tubs — which come in Pea & Vanilla and Carrot & Apple flavours — now carry a message reminding humans the dessert is only for mutts.

One staff member even wrote a reminder in block red capitals on the item’s shelf ticket.

A retail source said: “There were a number of incidents where humans bought it and mistakenly ate it because they didn’t read the packaging.

“So hopefully this sort of reminder will help.

“There were a number of complaints made by people about the taste, which is expected because it’s not for them.”

The novelty plant-based ice cream flew off shelves when it launched last year and Aldi brought it back for summer as a product.

The packaging makes it clear the product is for pets — although several customers are said to have still tried to return tubs to baffled staff.

It is understood no direct complaints were made to Aldi’s HQ.

The retailer declined to comment.
