Cycling doesn’t need to brake the bank with these money-saving ideas.

RE-USE RE-CYCLE: Get a terrific deal on a second-hand bike on sites such as eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

Check the bike’s frame isn’t dented or damaged. All other parts are easier to replace.

If you would prefer a fully serviced, pre-loved cycle, stores Decathlon and Halfords now have a second-hand section.

At Halfords, you can get an Apollo Excelle women’s hybrid bike for £93 — saving £82 on buying it new.

JOIN THE CLUB: If you’re fed up with your kids outgrowing their bikes before they’ve had much use out of them, a subscription may be for you.

At bikeclub.com, you pay a monthly fee for a high-quality children’s cycle, ranging from £5.99 for a balance bike up to around £20 for a teen’s hybrid.

You can reduce the cost a lot by choosing a second-hand “rebike” instead.

Do your sums to see if it works out cheaper than buying for your kids, but it’s a way to spread the cost and switch to a bigger bike when necessary. You pay a delivery/return fee.

RENT BY THE HOUR: Many big towns and cities have a rent-a-bike scheme where you can unlock a cycle using an app. It can be a cheap alternative to taking a taxi or paying for public transport.

Freebies for parents worth £2,900

Lime e-bikes cover Derby, Nottingham, Manchester, Milton Keynes and London. Check to see if there is a free credit offer when you sign up.

You can use the Nextbike scheme through Belfast Bikes in Northern Ireland, Ovo Bikes in Glasgow, and Santander Cycles in Milton Keynes, Stirling, Swansea and London.

On Sundays this month use the code CYCLESUNDAYS for Santander Cycles in London to unlock unlimited 30-minute rides for the day — usually £3.
