RESIDENTS have blasted a huge 15ft green metal fence that has been put up near their homes as a "monstrosity".

Valley Gardens in Brighton, will be partially transformed into an outdoor venue with thousands able to watch live screenings of Euro 2024 or see live music events.

The venue, given the name Central Park, is taking over the site off York Place from Friday to July 14.

Some events are free but others are ticketed from a minimum of £17.50 per person.

On Monday, contractors erected a 15ft green metal fence around the park.

But disgruntled locals were not happy with the decision.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told : "It looks like a compound.

"It's a hideous monstrosity."

He added it would be "a month long tagging festival".

Other residents have raised concerns about noise and antisocial behaviour during the events.

And some even suggested a cut-off time to limit this.

They said: "The surrounding little streets are used as public toilets.

"No one is against football and fun but the council events team issuing these licences need to place the noisiest events in non-residential areas or limit opening times to a 9pm cut-off time.

"Placing them in densely populated residential areas where none of the money generated finds its way back into the community it disrupted, is unreasonable.”

Other locals had concerns about the price of the England match screenings and music events.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: "Residents asked us to help create somewhere people could come together to enjoy the football this summer and this area is a designated event space for the city.

"It will be fenced off to help manage the event, keep people safe and limit disruption to the surrounding area.

"The height of the fence will help reduce sound spill to local properties and was identified in the event noise management plan to mitigate any impact on residents.

"Once the tournament is finished, the area will be fully restored and returned to normal, with all costs being met by our partner.

";The fan zone will also generate vital funds for the council."

And fans are expecting big things after watching England suffer a dismal 1-0 defeat to Iceland at Wembley on Friday.

England will then play Denmark in Frankfurt on June 20, before their final group game against Slovenia in Cologne on June 25.

Since their strong qualifying campaign ended in November, England have not been in ideal form going into the tournament.

But Gareth Southgate's troops have given him a huge boost ahead of their tournament opener as his entire squad took part in their first training session.

Your rights when a new fence blocks your views

Frustratingly for many, there is no statute or case law allowing an individual to block the construction of a building or installation of a fence, unless it causes a loss of light.

However, residents can object to planning applications citing concerns over the character of an area and appearance.

Residents are also encouraged to speak to neighbours to create a greater number of objections, which will be taken into account when deciding on whether planning permission is granted.

It comes as fuming locals slammed a fence which was built across a path hours before it was smashed up.

The wooden structure sparked controversy after it suddenly emerged on Tudor Rose Way, Harleston in Norfolk last Thursday.

Some locals had claimed the fence restricted their access to the local Co-op and doctor's surgery.
