Four tips for rehoming dogs so you can save cash and give a pup a happy life

LOOKING to bring a new four-legged friend into your home?

You can save on the cost of designer breeds and rescue one instead.

The number of dogs waiting in UK kennels continues to rise, according to animal welfare charity Blue Cross.

Try these tips to rehome a dog and help them settle in.

SAFE SPACE: Create a special area free from hazards or valuables where your dog can feel comfortable.

Thomas Rainbow, animal behaviourist for Blue Cross, says: “This will help your dog feel more comfortable and settled in the new surroundings.

“Making sure any outside space is secured by an appropriately sized fence is also important for keeping your dog safe.” 

TOILET TIME: Giving your dog the same food they were provided with at their shelter is key to avoiding digestive issues.

Slowly introduce diet changes later if you wish.

A regular routine where you give the dog access to outdoor space will also help form healthy toilet habits.

Thomas says: “Dogs going to the toilet in the house can be caused by lots of different factors, including stress. It is important that you don’t punish the dog for doing it.” 

SETTLE IN: Try to be at home often during the first week of a pet moving in and minimise the number of guests coming to visit you.

Walking the same route can also help your four-legged friend feel at home and it avoids overwhelming them.

TRAINING: Blue Cross recommends reward-based training methods, which means giving dogs treats when they are behaving.

Food is usually a good motivator, but toys and fuss can work just as well.

Use a verbal marker such as “yes” or “good” so your dog knows what they did was correct, then follow up with the treat.

Keep sessions to a few minutes but do it regularly and practise in different areas.
