Five simple ways to get a Wi-Fi boost instead of splashing out on an upgrade

And we take a look at some chic jewellery that Primark is selling at a very low price

SLOW internet connections are always frustrating, especially for many of us now regularly working from home.

Before you splash out on upgrading speeds, a few simple tricks can give you a boost. This is how to upgrade wifi.

Make internet life easier with our tips to win at wifi

HIGH ROUTER: Place your router in a central location in your home and avoid putting it on the floor. A high location is much better.

Do not place it in a cabinet or a cupboard, or near lots of walls.

Also keep it away from other electrical equipment including microwaves and baby monitors.

FOIL BOOST: If your router is in a corner near an exterior wall, some of the signal will be lost outside.

However, a sheet of aluminium foil placed behind the router can help bounce waves back into the home.

KEEP SWITCHED ON: Try not to regularly turn your router on and off, for example, at night or when leaving home.

Most routers contain the modem which is constantly trying to improve the speed of your internet connection.

If the router is turned off every day, upload and download speeds will be much slower.

Your provider may even suspect there is a fault and place a speed restriction on the connection.

WIRELESS EXTENDER: If you are struggling to get connection in all parts of the home, a wifi extender can help.

Five of the wildest gadgets at MWC (1)

These gadgets rebroadcast the signal, helping send it to the furthest parts of your property. You can get a TP Link extender for £15.99 from Argos.

CHECK YOUR SPEED: You can check your broadband is working as fast as it should be with a quick test on a laptop or computer.

Comparison site Uswitch offers one, as does consumer site Which at broadbandtest.which.co.uk.

If your connection is slower than your contract promises, and you have taken necessary steps to improve the speed, complain to your provider.
