PACK IN THE DAY

From Atom Smashers to Meanies, these retro crisps sold millions in the 70s and 80s – how many do you recognise?

While many of these brands are no longer around, nostalgic shoppers can get their fix for some of them online

IT really takes you pack, seeing some of the nation’s favourite crisps that have long since disappeared from the shelves.

A pristine packet of Quavers from 1975 was dug up in a back garden in Poole, Dorset, today.

The packet, in still-visible yellow, green and white colours, was discovered by Cenk Albayrak-Touye while he was renovating his new home in Poole. "I dug up the turf in the back garden and found a load of items but it was the yellow packaging that caught my eye." The Quavers crisp packet has the date 31 October 1975 printed on it, which links to a competition of some kind.In March this year a crisp packet quarter of a century old was found by litter pickers in Oxfordshire. Still in 'very good condition' it was a Walker's crisp packet and on the cover were images of England soccer stars Michael Owen and Gary Lineker - who became the firm's front man in TV adverts.
