GREGGS fans are buzzing after the bakery chain announced it will be adding a much-loved British classic to the menu - but for the next month it will only be available in 10 shops.

The new Greggs fish finger sandwich will launch in the North East on Thursday (May 23) and customers are already desperate to dive in.

The bakery chain’s version of the classic dish will see lightly-battered, cod fillet fish fingers served with iceberg lettuce in a soft corned-topped roll, with either tomato ketchup (468 calories) or mayonnaise (516 calories).

Alongside the sandwiches, which are both £3.90, Greggs will launch a fish finger wrap, with mixed leaves, cucumber and mayonnaise, priced at £3.70 (509 calories).

Excitement for the new offering was quick to spread when Greggs announced its launch on social media.

One fan said: “Bet these are banging.” Another added: “This is an actual dream.”

A third begged the chain to bring the new range to Australia.

But, even if you're not halfway around the world, you might face quite a journey to be one of the first to try the fish finger sandwiches.

Greggs will initially trial the new range across just 10 shops in the North East.

It will extend the trial to 10 more sites in the region in June, before a potential national-wide roll out in the coming months.

The new made-to-order fish finger range will be available as part of Greggs’ hot sandwich deal, which allows customers to enjoy any hot sandwich alongside southern fried potato wedges or a side salad and a cold drink from £4.95.

Today's announcement comes just weeks after Greggs unveiled its new summer range, including a chicken pesto flatbread, cherry Bakewell muffin, vegan Mexican chicken-free bake and six new iced drinks.

Earlier this year Greggs also unveiled five new and improved burgers and wraps.

The new range included a mayo crispy chicken burger, which combined chicken breast in a crispy coating, with iceberg lettuce and creamy mayonnaise.

It also has six UK airport branches, at least 17 drive-thru stores and 28 concessions inside Tesco stores.
