More than 6,000 bank branches closed in just 9 years – see which brand has axed the most high street sites

A popular bank is top of the list of closures

BANKS have closed down more than 6,000 branches in nine years, new figures have revealed.

The shock new data shows that more than half of sites which had been open in 2015 are now gone.

Lloyds Bank comes in third with 747 closures, while HSBC are a close fourth with 743.

Santander have shut down 477, while RBS have closed 453.

The figure for TSB is 423, and 277 for Virgin Money.

Coming in 9th and 10th place are Halifax and The Co-operative Bank, who shut 241 and 170 sites respectively.

The news comes after the full list of major high street banks shutting in 2024 were revealed earlier this year.

Several locations are pulling down their shutters in EnglandWales, and Scotland in a fresh blow to customers.

Hundreds of building society and bank branches closed their doors for good over just the past year.

Customers are increasingly turning to online banking to manage their finances while banks and building societies look for ways to cut costs.

But any closures can be an issue for others, particularly elderly people in rural areas who don't have access to the internet.

However, if your local branch is set to close, or has recently, you have some options.

You can carry out most basic banking tasks at your nearest Post Office.

You won't be able to apply for a loan or open a new bank account at once though.

You can find your nearest Post Office branch by using the locator tool on its website.

Meanwhile, many banks offer a mobile banking service - where they bring a bus to your area offering services you can usually get at a physical branch.

Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking services.

It's worth contacting your bank to see what services they have available, and when they might next be in your area.
