They had been slapped with both a service charge totalling £26.15 and a "checkout fee" of £2.99.

The charges raised the total cost of the meal by almost £30 from £193.50 to £222.64.

Posting online, the diner asked: "'Is Gloria in Shoreditch the only restaurant that charges you for the privilege of paying your bill?"

The "checkout fee" is added to every bill drafted using mobile phone app Sunday.

The team behind Gloria launched the app to save people time at the end of the meal.

Diners scan a QR code which allows them to pay the bill and leave a tip in "as little as ten seconds".

But the app has a two-star rating on Trustpilot - with one reviewer branding it "daylight robbery".

Other diners said they could only dodge the charge by asking to pay via contactless or a card machine.

The Shoreditch restaurant has now been bombarded with one-star reviews.

One user said: "It actually borders tacky. They might not be aware that it shows up like that - it just ruins the whole experience.

"It's for their own good they know about this. They might see it and reconsider.

"People are sick to the back teeth of booking places, bonkers service charges and still expecting tips, and now stupid things like this."

Another said: "This needs stamping out fast before it spreads. I hope the restaurant gets boycotted until they see sense."

A spokesperson for The Big Mamma group, which owns Gloria, told The Sun: "Big Mamma does propose Sunday as a payment option for clients who wish to pay faster, and the fee is part of this software which allows customers to pay via their phone, split the bill and instantly receive their receipt.

"Sunday is 100% optional. Of course, the traditional ways to pay (cash and credit card) are free of charge and are used by more than 60% of our guests."
