I tested bacon rashers from leading supermarkets and the delicious winner was only 23p a slice

THERE’S little better than a bacon butty.
We revealed this week that the super sarnie was voted Britain’s best-loved comfort food in a survey.
But where is the best place to shop for your rashers?
Hayley Minn put supermarket own-brand bacons to the test and rated them out of five for flavour, appearance and value for money . . .
£4 (2 for £7) Slice price: 50p or 44p
THIS was the priciest cut I tried, so I had big hopes.
It had good colour, browned well and was nicely salted and not too chewy.
So all good, but there were other far cheaper options that were even nicer.
Score: 4/5
£2.25 (2 for £4) Slice price: 23p or 20p
GOOD appearance, browned nicely and had a good amount of fat down the side, which is welcome.
Just the right saltiness, balancing well with the smokiness of the meat. One of my favourites.
Score: 5/5
£3, Slice price: 19p
SIXTEEN slices is loads for your money but they were far fattier than the rest.
During cooking, bits of fat came off but there was still quite a lot of it left on.
The bacon did taste OK but a bit too salty.
Score: 3/5
£2.25, Slice price: 23p
REALLY pleasing to the eye when I took it out of the pan, browned perfectly, with not too much fat.
Taste was bang on, too.
The smokiness came through strongly and there wasn’t too much salt.
Score: 5/5
£2.70 (£2.40 Clubcard) Slice price: 27p or 24p
FIRST thing I noticed was how much fat there was compared with other buys.
The taste was quite nice, and not as salty as some of its rivals, but there was not enough meatiness for my liking.
Score: 3/5
£1.89, Slice price: 19p
SEEMED good value for ten rashers but they shrivelled up a lot when fried and ended up much smaller than most.
Over-salted, too. Not too much fat, though, and pretty good, meaty flavour.
Score: 2/5
£1.89, Slice price: 24p
AT 19p a slice this seemed amazing bang for your buck. So I was hoping it tasted as good as the price.
But sadly it was far too salty, which overpowered everything else. I couldn’t detect much meat.
Score: 2/5
£2, Slice price: 25p
RASHERS were nice and big, which put a smile on my face.
The taste was also great, not too salty, and packed plenty of meatiness.
But this bacon had a bit too much fat compared to the others.
Score: 4/5
