Leisure centre operator ordered to axe facial recognition tech monitoring workers’ attendance
A LEISURE centre operator has been ordered to stop using facial recognition technology to monitor employee attendance.
Serco Leisure was using it alongside fingerprint scanning on more than 2,000 workers on its payroll.
The Information Commissioner’s Office said it was unlawful and the firm had failed to show why it needed biometric data rather than “less intrusive means” such as ID cards.
It comes amid an increasing rise of technology in business and growing concerns about the risks of artificial intelligence.
Information Commissioner John Edwards said: “Biometric data is wholly unique to a person, so the risks of harm in the event of inaccuracies or a security breach are much greater. You can’t reset someone’s face or fingerprint like you can a password.”
