Four cheap and easy tricks to keep your home smelling fresh this spring
BEING met by dodgy odours when you walk through the front door is never a pleasant welcome home.
But you don’t need to splash out on pricey room fresheners or posh reed diffusers to give your space a lovely scent.
Here are cheap and easy tricks to keep your pad smelling fresh . . .
COFFEE BREAK: Coffee grounds are great for cancelling out unpleasant smells.
Leaving out a bowl of them can really help if you have particularly stubborn lingering odours from, for example, pet urine or vomit.
You can dry out old grounds by spreading them on baking paper and cooking them at a low temperature until they are dry.

Then just leave the bowl as close as possible to the source of the offensive scent.
BAKING SODA: Pets, cooking and other household smells can sink into fabrics leaving unpleasant odours.
Instead of masking the stench, tackle the source with bicarbonate of soda. It neutralises the scents and you can buy a big pack for £2.50 at B&Q.
Sprinkle the bicarbonate over stinky rugs or carpets and leave it to sit for at least an hour, and ideally up to 24 hours, before vacuuming up.

You can also pop a little of the product in an open jar and keep in food cupboards to help prevent bad smells.
BED WASH: If you have a pet, make sure you regularly machine wash their bed as hair and bacteria builds up, creating the off-putting “dog” smell that can creep into a home.
DEEP FREEZE: Food waste bins can kick up a stench from the old grub and decaying produce.
Instead of keeping a bin, try putting a compostable bag in the freezer and scraping food in there instead.
Instantly freezing food will stop the odour.
And you can pop the bag out as usual before collection.
Just take a little extra care as sometimes frozen food becomes sharp and pierces a hole in the liner.
