Three ways to entertain kids in the kitchen with cheap and tasty treats
GLOOMY, cold weather makes it tougher to go outside with the kids and trips to soft play don’t come cheap.
Instead, try getting into the kitchen with little ones to whip up cheap and tasty treats.
Here are some fun ways to try it out . . .
CARROT CAKE OATS: We love this recipe from Rose Maclean (@dietitianrose on Insta). Ask kids to mash up two ripe bananas, and put in an ovenproof dish. Pour in 200g rolled oats and 40g plain flour.
Add half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a teaspoon of baking powder, a carrot, grated, and 40g of crushed walnuts. Finally, pop in two tablespoons of honey, around 500ml of milk and get the kids to mix all the ingredients until well-combined.
Cook in a pre-heated 180C oven for around 40 minutes until golden before allowing to cool. Top with plain vanilla or Greek yoghurt.

PERFECT PASTA: Get kids into making fresh pasta with this Tesco Real Food recipe and serve it with their favourite sauce.
Tip 200g of 00 grade flour (1kg bag £1.60 at Tesco) into a large bowl, then create a well in the centre.
Tip two beaten eggs in then mix until you have a shaggy dough. Tip it on to a clean surface and knead for ten minutes until it becomes a smooth ball. Put this back in the bowl and leave to rest for 20 minutes. Using children’s scissors, get the kids to cut off small chunks of pasta and you can place directly into a pan of boiling water.
Cook for around seven or eight minutes.

GETTING CHOPPY: Kids love to help with everyday dinner recipes, but it can be tough if there is lots of chopping involved. The answer lies in toddler-safe kitchen kits that can keep children occupied with cutting up fruit, veg and cheese.
