Sainsbury’s and M&S shoppers are clearing the shelves of retro Christmas cake that fans want McVities to bring back
SAINSBURY'S and M&S shoppers are rushing to buy a retro Christmas cake - but fans say they're a "nightmare" to get a hold of.
The supermarket giants are both selling their own versions of Tunis cake, a Madeira sponge topped with chocolate and marzipan fruits.
McVities' own version grew in popularity in the 1970's and 1980's before before being axed.
That hasn't stopped some shoppers calling for the iconic branded version to make a comeback though.
A has been set up calling for the iconic cake to make a return to shelves.
Luckily, in the same group, one person recently posted saying they had found an own-brand version in their local Sainsbury's branch.

They added a photo of the cake, captioning it their very own "Christmas miracle".
They said: "I've been to my local Sainsburys every day... not even a space on the shelf for them.
"Today I spy an empty gap and a label....I asked the staff if they had any, she went out the back to check, as they just had a delivery....she came back with one. So excited."
The post has notched up over a thousand likes and comments from foodies who can't wait to snap up the oldie goldie.

Sainsbury's shoppers looking to snap one of the retro cakes up will be able to find it online for the price of £8.50, coming in at just over 3,500 calories and 790g.
Meanwhile, Ocado, which delivers M&S food, is selling its own brand version for £9. The 530g tub comes in at 2,408 calories.
But not all shoppers have been able to get hold of the cake in their local supermarket.
One person, posting on the McVities Tunis Cake Campaign Facebook page, said they had been a "nightmare to get hold of" in the last few years.
Another added: "I hunted high and low a few years ago and found one in Sainsbury’s."
