BIG CHEESE

I tasted all the supermarket Camemberts and the winner was a budget buy far tastier than the most expensive

More than 45,148 tonnes of camembert was made in France last year

IT hasn’t been a gouda week for French cheese makers who are furious about an EU move to ban the wooden boxes they use for camembert.

They are cheesed off over proposals to make the casing recyclable by 2030 which they say is “bureaucratic madness”.

More than 45,148 tonnes of camembert was made in France last year and all major British supermarkets have their own range.

But with so many on offer, finding one that is udderly better than the rest can be tricky.

Josh Saunders tests eight supermarket camemberts, awards marks out of five and chooses his “grand fromage”.

WITH only a mild pong, many would be surprised by the rich taste of this budget buy.

It is creamy and indulgent without being too sickly.

This tickles the tastebuds perfectly and is sure to please even the most selective of guests at your dinner party.

Lidl’s Milbona French Camembert Rich & Creamy, 250g, £1.99 2/5

Lidl's camembert is a little lumpy and less satisfying to spread

IT is just under half the price of Sainsbury’s offering and the cheapest of our supermarket finds.

Unfortunately, it tastes that way too.

Too tangy, a little lumpy and less satisfying to spread, it fails to deliver what camembert lovers crave.

M&S Classic Baking Camembert, 250g, £3.70 3/5

M&S camabert was tasty at first but soon the creaminess became a bit too much

UPON opening the oven, a pungent scent filled the kitchen that left my mouth watering.

Warming and rich in flavour, this is definitely for fans of strong cheeses.

It was tasty at first but soon the creaminess became a bit too much.

Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Baking Camembert, 290g, £4 2/5

Sainsbury's camembert was excessively salty

WITH this one more than a quid dearer than the majority of the other offerings in this taste test, I had very high expectations.

Unfortunately, it was so excessively salty that I needed a big glug of water between each bite.

Waitrose & Partners Ready To Bake Camembert, 250g, £3.50 4/5

Waitrose camembert is a tad expensive

IT has the highest fat content of all of the ones I tasted and is suitably creamy and indulgent.

It looks beautiful after coming out of the oven and fills the air with a rich scent.

But I couldn’t award top marks as the price tag left me cheesed off.

Tesco Camembert, 250g, £2.80 4/5

AFTER popping this cheesy delight into my gob, I was immediately impressed.

It is gooey and rich and hits all of the right spots.

Forget flying all the way to France, I can stay here and have lots of helpings right now.

Asda Camembert Soft & Buttery, 250g, £2.80 3/5

IMPRESSIVELY smooth and spreads just like butter.

While this offering is not as strong as some of our other more cheesy contenders, I think it certainly makes a decent substitute that few would know was at the cheaper end of the scale.

Morrisons Soft & Creamy Camembert, 250g, £2.79 3/5

I was surprised by the balanced flavours and gooeyness of Morrison's camembert

WITH its thin rind, unappealing appearance, and only faint whiff, I didn’t have high hopes for this one.

But when I took a bite, I was surprised by the balanced flavours and gooeyness.

A tasty treat all around but certainly not a feast for the eyes.
