A SHOPPER has revealed the correct technique to avoid the infuriating "unexpected item" error at Tesco self-service checkouts.
Content creator Tom Davies took to Instagram to share the "game changing" hack.
Nothing is more dreaded by Tesco customers than the "unexpected item in the bagging area" message.
The seconds while you wait for an assistant to come and check your bags can infuriate many.
Luckily, this little-known tip will avoid the dreaded machine message and save you time while shopping.
Shoppers are normally met with the error message when they put their own bags on the scale, with the action often confusing the machine.

But you can avoid the problem by looking just above the scale where a hook sits.
Shoppers can hang their bags on the hooks, filling it up with produce to buy - and it still registers on the scale.
The Sun Online tested the genius tip and it actually worked.
In the Instagram video revealing the trick, the shopper revealed: "I have discovered something remarkable about the Tesco self service checkouts."

He explained how he was left in shock after another customer hung his bag on the hook - without having to place it on the scale.
Tom added: "The other day I was in Tesco and I saw a man walk confidently up to the self service checkout and hang his bag on this hook thing suspended above the bagging area."
He continued: "Now at this point, as a seasoned self checkout user, I have pretty much got my head in my hands.
"You're going to get the old 'please place the item in the bagging area'.
"And the man is going to have to come and it's going to take ages, and we're all going to be stuck waiting when we could be checking out our purchases.
"But then he puts his item in the bag, no errors, nothing."
Footage shows Tom trying the tip himself by placing his Tesco bag on the hook, rather than the scale.
He said: "Clearly I then had to try this for myself and it absolutely unbelievably it worked.
"This is a game changer for people who require extra space to accommodate their shipping.
"And all of this leaves me to wonder what other secrets of the bagging area are the supermarkets keeping from us."
It comes as a woman revealed a secret hack which could make your shopping experience at Tesco much easier - and it’s perfect if you are shortsighted.
Ali, who posts under , revealed how to make the text much larger on their self-service checkout screens.
