CHOCS AWAY

I tested own brand chocolate from Asda and Tesco – some tasted better than Galaxy or Dairy Milk but two bars were awful

SALES of premium chocolate brands have fallen by 160million bars in the past year.

Top dog Cadbury’s Dairy Milk has seen a slump, as have the nation’s other favourites, Lindt and Galaxy.

Yesterday we reported that Galaxy bars have shrunk by 10g, months after they increased in price.

But tightening your belt does not have to mean missing out on your go-to sweet treat, as supermarkets produce own-brand dupes for a fraction of the price.

Thea Jacobs finds out which is the best copy-choc of each fan favourite and gives marks out of five for price and flavour.

Galaxy

£1.25, 100g 1/5

THIS is now pricier than Dairy Milk, but for less chocolate.

While it used to be the creamiest bar on the market, I now find it sickly-sweet.

I have to say that the dupes are better.

Lindt

WHILE it is a classic premium chocolate, this is a high price for not very much sweet treat.

It is as creamy and smooth as ever, but I just can’t justify paying that price in the current climate.

Dairy Milk

£1.35, 110g 2/5

THE price is now hard to stomach.

It melts on the tongue, revealing its milky, chocolatey goodness.

But all too soon it is over.

I have lightened my purse for a few seconds of pleasure.

Lovett's

45p, 100g 1/5

THIS from Sainsbury’s reminds me of cooking chocolate, and not in a good way.

It has a chemically under-taste and melts quickly into a thin layer of choc rather than oozy goodness.

Choceur

£1.99, 200g 4/5

AN excellent premium own-brand offering from Aldi.

This is a very creamy bar that surpasses Galaxy.

It is pricier than the brand, but is double the size so works out cheaper.

Morrisons

89p, 100g 2/5

IT’S not bad, but not great either.

The main feature is an almost candyfloss-like sweetness, which is a little sickly.

It is better for price but overall, not my cup of tea.

Asda

£1.20, 200g 4/5

I WOULD pick this over Galaxy for value alone, as it is almost double the size and still cheaper.

It is not a bad taste either.

It has a very sweet start and finish.

This is an amazing dupe.

THIS is a glorious bar from Lidl at a cheap price.

It is smooth and really delicious.

Given its perfect balance between sweet and bitter, I would expect it to cost way more.

Ms Molly's

MY guess is this bar from Tesco is trying to be a mix of Dairy Milk and Galaxy.

But it is a poor imitation.

It has a strong, nutty flavour, not what I’m after.

Not as chocolatey as others.

Sainsbury’s

SAINSBURY’S has produced a pretty good dupe.

This has the milky overtones I associate with the famous Cadbury bar but at a fraction of the price.

M&S

£2, 180g 3/5

THE creamy texture envelopes your palate quickly.

It is delicious but pricey compared to many of the others.

That said, it is better value per gram than Lindt, and it tastes much better.

Tesco

£1.20, 200g 3/5

THIS is somewhere between Galaxy and Lindt.

It is very sweet but has a super-smooth and milky finish.

But it is let down a bit by a slightly chemical aftertaste.
