Final day as bargain supermarket to close store doors for good leaving shoppers worried over ghost town

A BARGAIN supermarket with more than 300 stores closes TODAY - and locals feel they're now living in a ghost town.

The Farmfoods store in Market Street, Huddersfield, will scan its last barcode at 4pm.

But shoppers will have the chance to snap up a bargain with 50% off all stock.

Though locals feel put out, with one prophesying resident writing on Facebook: "Huddersfield is changing."

Another said: "Huddersfield in town stores closing down = Iceland, Farmfoods, and Wilkos, why? Rents too high."

Farmfoods remains a favourite among bargain hunters as it often has cheap offers on popular products like makeup and air fryers.

Sadly, it isn't the first Farmfoods that has closed this year.

Its Cowgate store in Dundee shut in March, with another Glasgow shop closing the month before.

Plus its store in West Bromwich closed in May.

The frozen food specialist  branch at the end of February.

The store hosted a 50% sale which saw shoppers  to pick up discounted items.

While its Grangemouth branch shut up shop in January, with two others in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire seeing off its last customer in October 2022.

And it's another blow for shoppers in Huddersfield, as its will shut on October 28.

It follows a particularly tumultuous time for UK high streets with several popular chains including M&Co and Paperchase closing all stores in 2023.

Wilko was the casualty on the high street, closing all of its 400 stores by October.

It will see thousands of Wilko employees made redundant.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.
