My competitive instinct kicks in on the bruising assault course at The Bear Grylls Adventure.
I race ahead as I see my daughter Scarlett and my wife Kelly break into a sweat as they go over and under the wooden beams.
Then I realise I look ridiculous as a grown man trying to finish ahead of a primary school pupil.
But I should have kept my lead as before long I’m struggling to drag myself under a net, with the girls storming ahead on this Royal Marines-inspired course.
Scarlett, aged nine, said: “My dad thought he was being really clever by rushing off. He forgot though that I’m quicker.”

This was the first of the activities at the Birmingham NEC. Next up was the High Ropes, where we were strapped into a harness that would allow us to walk 65ft in the air.
Then we made our way to the archery before our final activity saw us head to the climbing area to tackle reconstructed mountain ranges from all over the world.
By the end of day, we were shattered but looking forward to our next visit.
