I tried copycat McVitie’s choc digestives – my winner takes the biscuit for taste and price and will save you £54

A PACK of biscuits is fast becoming a luxury for many families.

Research by The Grocer found McVitie's Chocolate Digestives - voted Britain's favourite in a 2020 poll - have risen in price by at least a quarter in the past year.

And whilst supermarkets are also putting prices of their own label products up, many still offer a saving when compared to big brands.

But do they taste as good?

We asked biscuit connoisseur Lynsey Hope, 42, from West Malling, Kent, to rate some milk chocolate digestives against the market lead to see how they fared.

The best was delicious and only cost half the price.

Recently spotted on sale in one shop for over £5, I managed to pick up a pack for £1.90 - more than twice the price of most own brands.

This is a winning recipe, I'll give them that.

The biscuit was crumbly but not so much that it made a mess, just enough to that melted in the mouth.

The chocolate is silky and delicious. The problem here is the price.

It's an expensive addition to your weekly shop.

Tesco's take on the digestive is a delicious crunchy biscuit with a generous coating of chocolate.

The biscuit to chocolate ratio was spot on and they didn't crumble at first touch like many others.

Scrumptious biscuits which are just as good, if not better, than the leading brand.

Buy a pack of these a week instead of McVitie's for a year and you'll save yourself over £54.

A little on the thin side and the base was drier than some others.

But on the whole, Asda' s are pretty good tasting biscuit for the price.

The kids lapped these up and they're a bargain compared to the big brand.

M&S Milk Chocolate Digestives

Mind how you go with these because they are incredibly more-ish.

The biscuit is thicker than McVitie's but soft with a nice bite.

The chocolate was rich and yummy.

Expensive for an own brand biccy but M&S is still cheaper than McVitie's.

M&S's digestives are a great find.

Morrisons' version is less than half the price per pack than McVitie's and you get more of them and a little lower in fat and calories, these were surprisingly good.

I actually preferred them to McVitie's.

There wasn't as much chocolate but the oaty flavour of the biscuit was spot on.

Aldi's digestives are a great price but far too crumbly and made a right mess when I tried to eat them.

There was a good helping of chocolate on top which helped ease my disappointment.

But the messy base was a little disappointing and a faff to eat.

Sainsbury's Lovett's Milk Chocolate Digestives

These from Sainsbury's don't really stand up to McVitie's. They are smaller and quite crumbly.

There's not enough chocolate on them.
