A BARGAIN supermarket is set to shut another of its stores in just days, following a string of closures.

The discount chain has closed over a dozen shops this year already.

On Saturday, September 2 the chain will be closing the doors for the final time on its Llanelli branch in Wales.

It comes after shoppers received emails last week saying: “We’re sorry to inform you that our Llanelli store on Park Street will be permanently closing from 4pm on Saturday, September 2.

“We’d love to see you at our neighbouring Food Warehouse store at Parc Pemberton, here you can pick up all your Iceland favourites and more.”

Another Iceland site will be closing this weekend on August 26 in Fratton.

The chain’s supermarket in the Market Shopping Centre in Crewe and its branch in Grange Road, Birkenhead will then close for the last time on Saturday, September 16.

It follows the closures of 13 Iceland supermarkets earlier this year.

Here is the full list of Iceland closures:

  • Mill Lane, Bromsgrove – February
  • Chineham Shopping Centre, Basingstoke – February
  • White Rose Centre, Rhyl – March
  • South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight – March
  • St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol – March
  • Deiniol Centre, Bangor – March
  • Newport – April
  • Berwick – April
  • Hexham – April
  • Flint, Wales – May
  • Beccles, Suffolk – June
  • St David’s Place, Swansea – July
  • Fife – August 12
  • Fratton – August 26
  • Llanelli – September 2
  • Crewe – September 16
  • Grange Road, Birkenhead – September 16

The above means that by September the full number of Iceland supermarkets that have closed this year will hit 17.

It’s not all bad news though because Iceland has opened a new store in Slough and two new shops under the Food Warehouse brand in Kendal and Aberdeen in recent weeks.

A spokesperson for Iceland previously told The Sun: “Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

“We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

“At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.”

Last year, there were a total of 24 new Iceland store openings.

To check, you can find your closest branch using Iceland’s store locator on its website.

The high street has suffered in recent years due to the switch to online shopping, especially during the pandemic.

In the last year the cost of living has been rising, meaning shoppers are cutting back on most non-essential spending.

This means that brick and mortar stores have seen less footfall.

Familiar brands including the likes of M&Co and Paperchase closed all of their stores earlier this year after falling into administration.

And Iceland isn’t the only bargain chain to close sites either, several others have announced closures too.

The most recent news is that bargain discounter Wilko collapsed, putting 400 branches at risk.

Meanwhile, a coffee chain with more than 2,000 sites is shutting another of its branches.

Plus, a bargain chain with more than 500 branches is set to “sadly” close another of its locations within days.
