Five cheap ways to keep kids entertained on flights to make flying a breeze

EVERYONE loves a holiday, but flights can be tricky with little children.

Early wake-up times, pent-up excitement and busy airports are a potential minefield for parents.

But with these cheap ideas, you can make air time a breeze . . .

SURPRISE, SURPRISE: All children love opening presents.

Rather than splashing out on new gifts, try wrapping up some of their travel-friendly toys in old wrapping paper.

Your kid will love opening packages on the plane. It doesn’t matter that it’s not something new — they’ll most likely be delighted to see some of their favourite belongings.

Draw out the activity by asking them to feel the package and guess what it is.

SNACK ATTACK: Pack a mountain of snacks for your journey — and then add more still.

Chomping on goodies will keep them still for at least five minutes, prevent hunger-induced meltdowns and avoid the need to buy marked-up food on board.

Just avoid sweeter foods so you aren’t faced with a sugar-high child and nowhere to run it off.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT: Keep little ones busy by packing a few activities.

Sticker books work well for travelling. Or The Works has wipe-clean animal and dinosaur activity books, currently reduced from £6.99 to £3.

You can also try Galt’s Water Magic book, down from £6 to £3, which provides mess-free colouring that just needs a little water in the pen and can be used again and again.

GAMES: A trusty game of I Spy can while away the time. If your child is a bit small for spellings, adapt it to colours. For example, I spy something red.

SCREEN IT OUT: Gadgets can make life easier. Fully charge phones and tablets before setting off. And download a couple of episodes of their favourite cartoons.
