I tried supermarket label garlic bread – the winner was delicious and cheaper than Aldi

NO bowl of pasta is complete without a piece of garlic bread on the side.

But like many every day essentials, the cost of this delicious side order is on the rise.

Supermarket own brand garlic flat breads vary a lot in price - costing as little as £1 in some supermarkets and up to £3 in others.

But which is the tastiest?

Asda Garlic and Herb Flatbread (245g)

This could very easily become a regular item on my weekly shopping list. It’s delicious.

It had a generous amount of garlic butter, the bread had a lovely soft, doughy texture.

It was also far cheaper than the others included in our test - less than half the price of Morrisons’ offering and cheaper and tastier than Aldi.

I need to stock up on this for the freezer before the price goes up.

Waitrose Roasted Garlic Flatbread (240g)

I enjoyed this, it’s a good size, soft and full of flavour.

The garlic better was nicely spread across the bread so there were no duff bits no one wanted.

I savoured every bite. But there is no getting away from the fact it’s incredibly expensive - three times as much as Asda’s bread and it’s a bit smaller.

The garlic and parsley topping on this was delicious.

It came up a little smaller than most and didn’t last long when being shared amongst a family of five.

But it had a great flavour, wasn’t stodgy at all and it cooked up well. Not a bad price either.

This felt quite hard in the packet compared to others and was an odd colour. It tasted a bit dry and cardboard like.

I’m a huge Aldi fan and love their budget products - this was cheap - but I’d search out an alternative option next time.

Morrisons Stonebaked Garlic Flatbread (255g)

A little dry - it needs more butter and the bread is quite thin and crispy, not doughy at all.

You might like it if you prefer crispier breads but it wasn’t my favourite. Not worth the £2.30 either.

Tesco Finest Caramelised Garlic and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Flatbread (200g)

Despite selling itself as a 'Finest' product, I wasn't too impressed with this.

It looked the part and had big lumps of garlic scattered in the middle.

Sadly, there was nowhere near enough butter and the bread itself was rather dry. Disappointing.

Even the Waitrose bread was cheaper per 100g and far nicer to eat.

Tesco was all out of cheaper options when I bought this, which is a shame. This isn’t worth the ‘Finest’ price tag.

This was less garlicky than others but I liked the tomato flavour and the bread was good.

Soft and delicious with just the right amount of crispiness on the outsides. It’s an amazing price too. Great budget bake from Lidl.
