Save some cash by becoming an at-home barista with these tips from Ashley Palmer-Watts, co-founder of Artisan Coffee Co. (artisancoffeeco.com) and former Michelin-starred chef.

FREEZE YOUR BEANS: “Maintain the freshness of your coffee beans and make them last double the length of time by freezing them into a perfect portion,” says Ashley.

“Make sure they are sealed, allow them to defrost fully before consuming, and once they have defrosted, do not re-freeze them.”

MILK THE FLAVOUR: “Make the perfect latte with a double shot of espresso, then add 130ml of steamed full fat milk, this creates a silky microfoam.

"If you don’t have a special machine, it’s no problem, just heat your milk by microwaving in a cup or in a small pan on the hob.”

PICK A POD: “Using a coffee pod machine is a great way to reduce waste, as coffee pods keep the coffee fresher for longer than bags and provide the correct amount each time,” Ashley reveals.

“Plus, make sure that you descale your coffee machine at least once a month to keep it working as efficiently as possible.”

SHAKE IT UP: “If you have a coffee pod machine, give your coffee pods a shake before placing them into the chamber, this will allow for optimal extraction and flow,” says Ashley.
