Before last month, prices had steadily risen since December 2020, when the average for a pint in a pub was £3.79.

It means the cost has soared by more than 11 per cent in two years, the Office for National Statistics reports.

Bitter drinkers are faring slightly better as a pint fell 3p from £3.60 in December to an average of £3.57 last month.

But overall, the cost of both bitter and lager has increased in the final three months of 2022.
