CHOCY HORROR

Cadbury has made a massive change to Easter eggs this year – and shoppers are fuming

CADBURY has cut the size of its Easter eggs – without slashing prices to match.

The chocolate giant has slashed small, medium and large easter eggs, in the latest example of shrinkflation to hit shoppers.

Meanwhile the larger Cadbury Flake egg, priced at £5, is now 231.8g after dropping from 249g.

Small eggs have also been affected – such as the Dairy Milk Freddo Faces easter egg, which has shrunk from 122g to 96g but costs £1.25 instead of £1.

Shrinkflation – where products get smaller but the price stays the same – is hitting shoppers as inflation soars.

Food prices rose 16.8% last year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Consumer expert Sarah Coles of Hargreaves Lansdown slammed the downsizing.

She said: “The horrors of shrinkflation are turning Easter eggs into mini eggs.

“We’re spending significantly more in return for less chocolate.

“It feels particularly unfair to those on lower budgets, who are trying to keep everyone happy this Easter without breaking the bank.”

Chocolate lovers on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group have been complaining about the practice.

One said: “The little Cadbury eggs were £1 last year and this year they are £1.25 and a hell of a lot smaller.”

A Mondelez spokesperson said: “We’re constantly looking at ways to innovate our products while keeping the fan favourites that the nation knows and loves.”

“This year we’ve revamped our Easter egg range, offering a wide variety of sizes and price options for our Cadbury fans to choose from.”

A spokesperson added that traditional gift shell eggs have replaced large shell eggs and there are eight different flavours including Creme Egg and Mini Eggs.

The small eggs are part of its new “surprise and delight” range, with treats back inside eggs.

It’s not the first time Cadbury has reduced easter chocolate sizes.

In 2019, it shrunk the size of several popular treats including mini-eggs, but it also reduced their recommended retail price.
