Three electric heaters for under £30 and the exact amount they cost to run
WITH rocketing energy bills, we’re all looking for cheaper ways to keep warm this winter.
Portable electric heaters are not as efficient as central heating when it comes to warming up your whole home, but they can be useful for making small areas toasty fast.
We show you where to find the cheapest deals, plus how to track costs so you don’t get hit with shock bills . . .
ROUGH COSTS: Citizens Advice has a handy tool to give you a rough idea of how much each appliance in your home costs to run.
Its guide claims that a typical electric fan heater would cost around 85p per hour, but the price can vary a lot for different models. Visit bit.ly/3TNyW6g to find out how much other gadgets cost to use.
HOW TO CRUNCH THE NUMBERS: If you want to be more accurate, check the wattage of your heater on its label or in the manual. Because of the Government’s Energy Price Guarantee, currently most of us will be paying 34p for every kilowatt hour of electricity that we use until April.
So, a 1,000-watt appliance would cost you 34p to run for an hour and a 2,000W appliance would set you back 68p an hour.

To calculate the current hourly running cost in pence for any appliance, take the wattage, divide it by 1,000 and multiply that figure by 34.
Here are some of the best-value heaters we found and how much they cost to run:
WILKO: The cheapest electric heater I found at any major retailer is the Beldray upright fan heater, which costs £15.
It’s 2,000W, which means that it costs 68p an hour to run. It has two heat settings and a cool air function, plus it’s nice and small so it fits in most places.

TOOLSTATION: For a larger heater, Toolstation has the 58cm 2,000W convector heater standard for £23.99, which has the same running costs as the Beldray.
DUNELM: Halogen heaters are great for warming a small area quickly. Dunelm’s 1,200W grey halogen heater is £28 and costs 41p an hour to run.
