HOUSEHOLDS are being urged to take their energy meter readings before bills rise for 24million people from midnight.

If you are on a traditional meter and don't send regular readings to your supplier, you could end up being charged too much.

If you're on a smart or pre-payment meter you don't need to do this.

Otherwise, you need to check as close to today as possible. But you can take a picture and submit it later on.

The average household energy bill will go up from £1,971 to a frozen £2,500 next month under the Energy Price Guarantee announced by Prime Minister Liz Truss earlier this month.

However, millions of households will be receiving a £400 energy rebate off their bills from October to March 2023.

It's worth noting the Energy Price Guarantee only caps the cost per unit households pay, so your actual bill could be more or less than £2,500.

It will all depend on how much energy you use.

To ensure customers on traditional meters aren't charged more than they should be on the lower rate, they are being urged to get their meter readings around October 1.

You have some time to submit the reading, depending on your supplier.

Some are recommending that you take a photo today, which you can then submit later if you're unable to get online today.

Scottish Power said customers have to get readings in by October 5 which can be done via its app or online.

An Octopus Energy spokesperson said customers on traditional energy meters just have to take a picture of their meter on October 1 and submit it within a week.

An OVO Energy spokesperson said if customers want to submit a meter reading after September 30 they will need to call the supplier to backdate the reading.
