Wetherspoons to open majority of pubs after 1pm on Monday – but some will open at 8am

WETHERSPOONS will open selected pubs early on the day on Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

The move will allow millions of mourners to get something to eat and drink on Monday, September 19.

Selected Wetherspoon pubs in London will open at 8am and close at midnight on Monday.

However, most of the 851 "Spoons" pubs will open later than usual.

A spokesperson for the pub giant said: "Wetherspoon is opening its pubs in central London, rail stations and airports and all of its hotels from 8am until midnight on Monday 19 September."

The remaining pubs outside London will instead operate at reduced hours.

It comes as five of the UK's largest pub, bar and restaurant chains have announced their venues will stay open for the Queen's funeral on Monday.

The Stonegate Group, which operates over 330 pubs and bars, has said all its venues will remain open so members of the public can watch the funeral "where possible".

Greene King, which runs 2,600 pubs in the UK, said the majority of its venues will stay open.

Mitchell and Butler, which runs around 1,700 pubs, restaurants and bars, including Harvester, All Bar One and O'Neill's, said all its venues will stay open on Monday and showing the funeral "where possible".

The hospitality business which runs Premier Inn and Beefeater has confirmed all its restaurants and hotels will stay open as usual.

Domino's will close all its stores on Monday, but they will reopen from 12pm.

Most supermarkets will also close their doors to customers on Monday.

Tesco is to closes all of its large stores so staff can pay their respects.

The supermarket giant said its express stores will be open until 5pm except for a small number of express stores in Central London and Windsor that will be open throughout the day.

Asda is closing all its stores from midnight on Sunday, September 18, to 5pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, AldiLidl, Co-op, Morrisons and Iceland have all announced at least partial closures.

The longest-reigning British monarch died on Thursday aged 96.

Her majesty's state funeral has been declared a bank holiday by King Charles and a number of retailers and businesses have already decided they'll close their doors.
