Poundland to expand frozen food to 25 extra shops – is your local on the list?

POUNDLAND has announced it is expanding out its chilled and frozen food range - with 25 new locations coming this year.

The budget retailer first started testing selling frozen food including pizza, chips and ready-meals in 2019.

In 2020, it announced plans to roll out the concept to 60 more shops, and today announced the latest locations to be added to the list.

Of these, eight will open during September at a rate of around five stores a week.

Another five will follow in October, with a further 12 still to be announced.

By the autumn, around 350 stores – nearly half the chain – will be selling chilled and frozen food.

The company adds that popular items in the range so far have included products from brands such as Ginsters, Cathedral City, Lurpak, Sutherland sandwiches and Rustlers cheeseburgers.

Customers have also been snapping up frozen products including Bernard Matthews chicken breasts and Birds Eye cod fillets, plus brands such as Aunt Bessie’s, McCain, and Young’s.

Poundland has developed the range in partnership with Fultons Foods, a frozen food retailer with 90 stores across the North of England.

Austin Cooke, Poundland’s chief operating officer, said: “As we extend into exciting new categories such as chilled and frozen food and clothing, whether customers want a full shop or to top-up, we’re continuing our mission to deliver the very best value, on the items we know our customers need most.” 

It comes after Poundland started selling fresh meat and fish for as little as £1.

The new range of 11 items, branded "cookit", are being rolled out across hundreds of the low-cost stores over the next three weeks.

Customers will be able to grab a pack of bacon for £1 and a single sirloin steak for £3.50.

The new items will make Poundland and alternative meat and fish provider to supermarkets and butchers.

Fresh fruit and vegetables can already be picked up in over 60 Poundland stores.

You could get more for less at other retailers

Poundland is selling 150g of bacon rashers at £1, but so it Iceland. However, the stores bacon prices does undercut the prices on offer at Aldi and Lidl.

You can get six pork sausages for £1.75 from Poundland. However, you can get eight pork sausages for £1.49 at Aldi right now, while Iceland are selling the same amount for £1.

However, Poundland's £3 rump steak is a bargain if you are to compare the price with other supermarkets.

Poundland's £3 charge for 350g of beef mince is high and you can bag 500g of the same stuff for £1.75 from Aldi.

The pound shop's two cod fillets are also over priced when compared to Lidl's range.

While prices may appear to look low it's always good to compare with the product ranges of other supermarkets to make sure you aren't getting duped by swanky marketing.
