The banking giant also announced 15 branch closures less than two months ago.

A Barclays spokesman said it the closures "reflect the way that our customers are increasingly choosing to do their banking."

He added: "We will always give twelve weeks’ notice of any branch closures, explaining the rationale for the decision, as well as highlighting alternative branches and ways to bank.

"This includes working with the local community to find different, more flexible ways for our colleagues to continue to provide local banking support, such as through pop-up presences.”

Banking groups are blaming a lack of footfall for site closures as a growing number of people now using mobile and internet banking instead of visiting a branch.

Experts predict that around 700 to 800 bank sites across the UK face closure in 2022.

HBSC will close 69 of its branches before the year is out after shuttering 82 of its banks last year.

Meanwhile, Lloyds Banking Group confirmed another 66 closures of Halifax and Lloyds bank branches are coming this year.

Natwest will close 32 branches this year, including Royal Bank of Scotland sites.

As well as fewer people visiting branches, companies are looking to cut costs as sites become more expensive to staff and run.

Many banks also offer a mobile banking service.

This is where your bank brings a bus to your local area that has the services that are usually available at your branch.

You should call up your bank to see if its runs a banking bus and they will be able to tell you where and when it will be parked.

Other banks use buildings such as a village hall or library to offer mobile banking services.

Some 4,685 bank branches have closed since 2015.
