Barclaycard responded to users on Twitter to say it is aware of the issue and that it "urgently investigating".

It added: "There are some issues at the moment using contactless and the team are working on a fix.

"You can receive a message when it's back up and running by visiting the status link."

An update shared on Barclaycard's service update page says the issue is still ongoing and that customers should use their PIN or mobile phone to make payments.

A spokesman for the firm told that it first started seeing the glitch in March.

He added: "We are currently experiencing a technological issue impacting the contactless functionality for some Barclaycard cardholders.

"We are working hard to fix the issue, and a resolution is on track to be implemented in the coming days.

"All impacted customers have been contacted to make them aware, and we will contact them again once the issue is resolved.

"We would like to apologise to all impacted customers for the inconvenience caused."

What to do if you can't pay by contactless?

If you are experiencing problems with Barclaycard, you should firstly contact the firm directly.

You can get in touch through the Barclaycard app, via email, Apple message or on the customers services phone number.

More details on how to contact Barclaycard can be found

Barclaycard is advising customers to use their chip and PIN when paying for goods in person.

It says you can also try paying through mobile - either with Apple Pay or Google Pay for Android.

You could also use another bank card to pay until the problem is resolved, or withdraw cash from an ATM to pay.

Just make sure that you have enough money in the account first so that you don't go overdrawn.

Can I get compensation from Barclaycard?

Unlike telecoms firms, banks and credit card providers are not obliged to automatically issue compensation if they have an outage or technical problems.

You are entitled to make a complaint if you believe you have been left out of pocket because of the issues though.

For example, if you have incurred a penalty fee because you were unable to make a payment, or have gone overdrawn because you didn't receive money you were supposed to.
