Every family could be forced to pay BBC tax… even if they don’t have a TV
EVERY family could be forced to pay a BBC tax — even if they do not have a telly — according to a bonkers new plan.
Peers say the £159-a-year licence fee should be scrapped for a new telly tax based on household income.
The compulsory TV tax plan from the Lords’ Communications and Digital Committee is similar to the one used in Germany.
There, the amount people are charged for their public broadcasting service is linked to how much property tax they pay.
But John O’Connell, chief exec of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to prop up the BBC via the licence fee or any other tax.
“This crazy concept is no better than the licence fee.”

The Lords committee knocked back a Netflix-style subscription service and Government cash grants fully funding the BBC.
They say the corporation faces “major challenges”, with “rising competition and costs, and constrained funding”.
Chairwoman Baroness Stowell said: “The committee concluded that, when it comes to what the BBC does, the status quo is not an option.”
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has previously ordered a shake-up to the “outdated” 100-year-old funding model.

The BBC said: “We welcome the Lords’ report. It is right there is a debate on whether the licence fee needs to evolve.”
