List of areas giving EXTRA cash on top of £150 council tax rebate

HOUSEHOLDS in some areas are being given extra cash help on top of the £150 council tax rebate.

The money is being dished out by local authorities to the most hard-up households, as everyone battles pricey bill rises.

Energy bills could hit £2,800 in October, adding another £800 to what customers already pay, and plenty of other price rises amid the gruelling cost of living crisis are bring most families to their knees.

In response the government handed out one-off payments of £150 to those living in council tax bands A-D.

Councils are dishing out this cash in different ways, and some have confirmed that those who qualify for the main payment can get even more money if they are still struggling.

On top of the main council tax energy rebate scheme councils have been given £144million discretionary fund.

Those who are not eligible for the £150 will be able to apply, like those living in council tax bands E-H.

It means they don't miss out on support just based on the postcode lottery of where they live, even if they're struggling.

But not only that, plenty already in receipt of the £150 can get a "top-up" too.

That means they get money on top of the £150, in some cases giving households support of up to £170 or £200 in total.

We reveal if your area is dishing out the generous spare cash.

The areas giving EXTRA cash on top

The amount being given varies based on where you live, with some councils not giving any extra cash at all.

So far we know that, Camden's own discretionary scheme is open to those living in bands A-D who "have received one payment but are still struggling".

Successful applicants will get £150 payment and those getting council tax discounts under existing schemes will be prioritised.

But if you live in the area you'll need to apply, even if you got the first payment automatically.

You'll need to show you're in financial hardship as there is a limited pot of cash that's allocated according to the area's size and need.

Meanwhile Wyre Forest District Council is giving "top up" payments of £35 to households in all council tax bands.

You'll get the cash if you live in this area and get the maximum council tax discount available through existing schemes.

Bromley is giving out £40 top-up payments to those in bands A-D getting council tax support.

And in Hackney around 30,000 households getting a council tax reduction will automatically get an extra £30 payment, bringing the total help to £180.

Of the 120,000 city households eligible to receive the £150 payment, over 31,000 of those get a £20 "top-up" too.

At the same time, homes in Buckinghamshire get a " of £25 on top, meaning £175 overall if they're eligible.

Both and have announced details of specially curated "top ups" for those in the eligible bands too - but we don't know exactly how much residents will get over the £150 just yet.

City of York council meanwhile, expects to publish details on the extra cash it has to spare .

Plenty more could announce their own soon too - lots of councils explain that they are still finalising details.

How can I check if I'm due more?

You can check your  and social media pages for the latest updates on when you will get the cash.

You can also check if you'll get extra payments on top of the £150.

Not all councils have announced details of how they will be giving out the cash from the discretionary fund.

And those which have may have different ways of getting the top-up, and give out different amounts. You might have to apply or it could be sent automatically.

If you think you're missing out on the cash you could challenge your council tax band if you think it's wrong.

But beware a revaluation of your band could put you in a lower band where you pay MORE council tax, so consider the risks.

You can also apply for a council tax reduction if you're on a low income or claim other benefits.

Depending on your circumstances, you could get your bill reduced by up to 100%.

Exactly what discount you get depends on factors including where you live, how many children you have, or benefits you claim, or even your household income.

For instance, if you're the only adult in your household, you automatically get 25% off your bill - if you're a fully student household, you could get 100%.
