Five tips to revive classic playtime for kids as the weather warms up

TURN off the tech when the weather warms up and show the family some good old-fashioned fun.

Three in five kids have never flown a kite and a third have never played “tag”, according to Persil’s Dirt Is Good campaign.

So reinvent the old classics and start some outdoor traditions of your own.

CHALK IT UP: Arm kids with jumbo-sized chalks, like Tesco’s Go Create jumbo chalk bucket, £2, and let them unleash their inner Banksy on your patio or paving. Or grab some brightly coloured paints. The Works has 300ml bottles for £1 each. Find a selection of smooth stones and let your kids get pebble-painting.

CAN DO: You can have great fun with empty tin cans. Remove any sharp bits then stack ten empty tins in a pyramid. Start with four at the bottom, then balance three on the next layer, then two and one at the top. Take it in turns to throw a ball and see who can knock over the most cans.

Not one for when your neighbours are trying to sleep, though.

PLAY DIRTY: Stuck for inspiration for how to prise your kids away from the screen and get them outside? Before they unplug, get them to search for Persil’s Dirt Is Good project, for ideas from treasure hunts to mud-painting.

BOWLED OVER: Never played garden boules? Give it a go. Buy a cheap set of plastic boules, like the £3.99 pack of eight at The Range. Involve the whole family in some healthy competition.

THWACK’S MORE LIKE IT: Stop kids scrolling and get them whacking a ball instead. Swingball is fun for one but great for two. It is good for getting outdoors and improves coordination  — and you will not need to knock on your neighbour’s door to recover any missing balls. Winner!

Argos has an Early Fun swingball set, currently down from £23 to £17.25.
