CASH-strapped mourners are so broke they are ­RENTING coffins for funerals as the cost- of-living crisis grips beyond the grave.

Funeral directors are allowing struggling families to pay for a removable wooden or cardboard box that fits inside a “show” ­casket.

The exterior is used in the service and ­burial.

It is then removed, leaving the body to decompose or be cremated in cardboard.

The move saves loved ones at least £500 as the average price of a rented coffin is £250, compared to at least £750 to buy a casket.

The National Association of Funeral Directors confirmed a growing number of funeral homes are offering rental coffins of casket liners amid the cost-of-living chaos.

A spokesman said: “There are many ways to keep the cost of a funeral within a budget, while making it special.

"Provided it is clear what is being provided, this is one of several choices available that may assist families.”

One firm set to introduce a rental coffin is Woven Farewell.

The Dorset-based business provides sustainable willow coffins for an average of £750. But rentals are around £250.

Founder Sophia Campbell said: “If we can rent items for other events such as marriages then why not death?

"I aim to make willow ­coffins accessible to lower-income families without compromising on quality.

"The rental ones will be £250 on average, they are pristine.”

But an industry insider added: “This move is the latest sign the living costs crisis is literally becoming a killer issue.

"This rental coffin market is saving families thousands of pounds, but it’s sad they must come to terms with the fact their loved one isn’t in an enclosed casket.

“It’s this type of pressure that will increase mental health troubles that are already rife.”
