But some were left raging after opening theirs only to see that their treat had been broken or had melted.

One Tesco shopper tweeted: "Ever so disappointed to find my Easter egg bought from my local Tesco Express store in this state when I opened it!"

She posted a picture of her chocolate egg, which had melted in on itself.

The outside chocolate shell appeared to be a paler colour than the inside of the egg as well.

Another Tesco customer said his broken egg was "not the surprise I was expecting".

He uploaded a picture to Twitter of a battered Easter egg box, with only one half of an egg appearing to be inside.

A big chunk of the chocolate shell was missing too.

While a number of Sainsbury's customers were left disappointed too after discovering their eggs had seen better days.

One customer, who ordered his Easter egg from Sainsbury's, posted a picture to Twitter of the packaging bashed in and sellotaped over.

He said: "When you order an Easter Egg from @sainsburys and it's battered and taped up."

While another shopper tweeted at the supermarket: "How do I contact you to arrange refund for a mouldy melon and squashed Easter egg delivered?"

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We take great care to ensure our Easter eggs are sold in the best possible condition.

"But on the rare occasion a customer is unhappy with the quality of their egg, we're happy to arrange a replacement or refund if the customer returns the item to store."

Sainsbury's was contacted for comment.
