American Express took to social media to respond to disgruntled customers.

It said: "We are aware that technical difficulties are currently affecting our phone and online Account services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this."

The firm advised any customers trying to make a payment to do so by bank transfer.

New fraud checks came into force in March and shoppers were warned it could lead to payment issues and their card being declined.

When shopping online, you'll now be asked to provide another form of ID when you checkout such as a password or one-time verification code.

Your card issuer or bank might send you a passcode via text or call your phone when you're trying to make a purchase.

If you can't provide authentication, the transaction could be blocked after March 14.

We have asked American Express if today's issues are related to these changes.

The Sun has contacted the firm for a comment and we'll update this story when we hear back.

Each provider has its own complaints procedure, so it's best to start there.

American Express says you should provide your name, phone number and account details as well as any relevant documentation when making a complaint.

You can find out where to direct your complaint using a .

The firm said it aims to resolve complaints within three business days, and will confirm the outcome in writing.
