Sainsbury’s BANS Russian products from sale as war in Ukraine continues
SAINSBURY'S has BANNED Russian products from sale in its stores and online.
The drastic move has come as the war in Ukraine continues.
Two products have been taken off the shelves at the supermarket, including Russian Standard vodka and Karpayskiye black sunflower seeds.
Sainsbury's joins Co-op Food which was the first UK supermarket group to remove Russian-made vodka from sale in response to the crisis.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We stand united with the people of Ukraine.
"We have reviewed our product range and have decided to remove from sale all products that are 100% sourced from Russia."
The supermarket had also considered removing JJ Whitley products from its shelves too.
The artisan, and often flavoured, vodkas are also currently made in Russia, but amid the ongoing crisis, production is moving to the UK at the end of this month.

The Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "We support their announcement earlier in the week that they are moving all production to Chorley, and will therefore continue to sell those products."
The supermarket has also made a big announcement on changes to the packaging of one of its popular food products.

In respect to the city at the heart of the conflict, Sainsbury's has renamed one of its chicken dishes. The spokesperson said: “We are re-naming ‘Chicken Kiev’ to ‘Chicken Kyiv’ and the new packaging will be available in the coming weeks."
Sainsbury's isn't the only giant pulling the plug on products from Russia though.
Companies including Wetherspoon, Asos and Disney are all cutting ties with the nation because of the war.
Like Sainsbury's, bars here in the UK have stopped selling vodka they had stocked too.
But it's also lead to some retailers shutting up shop, and even energy firms are pulling out of the country.
Tanks first rolled over Ukraine's borders last week after president Vladimir Putin ordered his long-feared invasion.
Since then, booze giants like Wetherspoon has removed Baltika Lager from its own 870 locations across the UK, while vodka has been removed from 25 bars across London, Birmingham and Bristol belonging to Nightcap group.
We're not yet sure if other supermarkets will make the same move as Sainsbury's and Co-op, but we will update this story once we know more.
