Wetherspoons is the latest company to axe connections to Russia, following the invasion of Ukraine last week.

All bottles of the 5.4% Russian beer - which cost £2.99 - will be returned to distributor Carlsberg.

The pub chain said: “In light of the situation in Ukraine we just felt that we could not stock it anymore.

“As of today all those beers won’t be available in any Wetherspoons pub and either have been or are in the process of being returned to the Carlsberg distributor.

“We are not implying in any way that anyone involved with the brewery is directly involved with what’s going on but we thought in light of the current situation our pubs don’t want to be serving Russian beers.”

Baltika Breweries’ beers are distributed by Carlsberg Group, which also sell Carlsberg, Heineken and Kronenbourg.

The bar chain has confirmed these will be unaffected as the lagers are brewed in Denmark.

Meanwhile, bars and restaurants across the UK are ditching Russian vodka in a sign of solidarity against the Ukraine war.

Nightcap group, the owner of The Cocktail Club, Tonight Josephine and Barrio Familia, has removed the traditional Russian tipple.

It will no longer sell it in 25 bars in London, Birmingham and Bristol.

Compare the Market has pulled its adverts which feature Russian meerkat Aleksandr Orlov from appearing around news bulletins due to the Ukraine war.
