Asda to give 100,000 workers bonuses of £413 each

ASDA will give more than 100,000 workers bonuses of £413 each as part of their February pay packet.

The supermarket said that in total, £27.8million will be dished out to workers in bonuses.

Full-time store workers will get £413 on average, while other hourly paid colleagues will get an average of £269.

But exactly what each worker will get will depend on their individual circumstance, Asda said.

The supermarket said the boost was a thank you for the hard work staff have put in over "challenging circumstances" during the pandemic.

It claims to be the only supermarket offering workers a bonus once they have completed a three-month probationary period.

Asda’s people director Hayley Tatum said: “This payout is only possible thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of our store colleagues.

"They did a fantastic job serving millions of customers last year, often in challenging circumstances due to the pandemic, and their bonuses are well deserved.”

However, the bonus comes at a time when Asda workers are threatening to strike over pay.

Distribution workers could walk out after rejecting the grocer's latest pay offer.

Although Asda has offered staff a rise offer of between 5% to 7.5%, GMB union members have argued this is not high enough to compensate for a crippling cost of living crisis.

A strike could cause product shortages and home delivery delays, The Sun understands.

It comes as Marks & Spencers announced workers' wages would be boosted to £10 an hour.

It means staff will get an extra 50p an hour.

The minimum wage is currently £8.91, after it rose last year.

But many workers will get an extra 59p an hour when the new rate comes into effect in just a month's time.
