I ALWAYS order a Big Mac when I pop to McDonald’s so I was really excited to try the fast food chain’s brand new chicken version.

The chicken Big Mac will launch in the UK tomorrow for the first time ever, more than 40 years after the original beef burger debuted in restaurants.

I had a sneak preview to see what the new version tastes like and whether it can compete with the signature Big Mac.

The classic McDonald’s scent wafted out of the familiar brown paper bag and made my mouth water when I collected my order.

But when I opened up the new blue cardboard box, it didn’t look that special.

The US burger giant has replaced the Big Mac’s two beef patties with crispy chicken fillets.

But the colours of the brown bun, beige fillet and creamy sauce all blurred together and I started to worry it was going to be too dry - especially when paired with a side of salty fries.

However, the first mouthful resolved my concerns as the chicken is juicy and there’s plenty of sauce and cheese to moisten it up.

The burger is also topped with crisp lettuce and a few gherkins.

If you like McDonald’s chicken nuggets, then its new Big Mac will hit the spot.

It’s like two big nuggets, sandwiched between the three toasted bread rolls, with the added bonus of melted burger cheese.

It wouldn’t be a Big Mac without a dollop of the legendary sauce - but I think it needed a bit more to liven up the flavours a bit.

A few more gherkins would have helped to add a bit more variation, as after a few bites I found it got a bit boring.

I enjoyed the chicken Big Mac but I prefer the classic beef version, because it’s more varied in texture, appearance and flavour.

The new chicken burger is on sale at McDonald’s 1,300 UK stores from tomorrow until March 15.

It costs £4.09 for the sandwich, or £5.59 for a medium meal with chips and a drink - you can go large for £5.99.

It also has more calories with 544kcal, compared to a Big Mac which is 508.

The chicken legend, mozzarella dippers and Galaxy chocolate and salted caramel McFlurries are also making a comeback.

The BBQ bacon stack, cheesy bites and the breakfast bagel and wraps will leave the menu to make room for the new additions.

McDonald's is offering 20% off its entire menu today, and the discount will last all week.
