So if you’re having a clear-out, see if you can make a quid or two from your old stuff.
Using certain websites can bring you a wider and more specialist audience who might pay more.

SMARTPHONES AND ELECTRICALS: eBay is the place, with its most popular second-hand items smartphones (average price £238), coffee machines (£71) and robotic hoovers (£76).

FURNITURE: Changing up your sofa?
Stick your old one on Gumtree.
The site’s most searched “for sale” categories over the past six months have been dining room and living room furniture, beds and bedroom furniture, and bikes.
Fees: No fees to post an ad in Gumtree’s For Sale section, but you can pay £1.50 to bump it up the listings.

TRAINERS: Trendy clothing site Depop said tee shirts, trainers and sweatshirts are among its most popular categories.=
Fees: Sellers are charged ten per cent per item sold, plus a transaction fee of 2.9 per cent and 30p.
Shipping can be added to the cost or paid by the seller
SELL: Pair of Adidas trainers for £25, with fees of £3.53
DRESSES: Young women flock to Vinted for affordable fashion, so it’s great for flogging old partywear. Its top three sellers right now are sweaters, jackets and coats.
Fees: No fees for listing and selling.
SELL: River Island dress for £10 for free
KIDS CLOTHES: Kids O’Clock is a new website for second-hand kids’ clothes.
They don’t need to be designer but posh brands like Mini Rodini or Ralph Lauren are popular.
Fees: Site takes 30 per cent commission.
SELL: Jojo Maman Bebe girls’ dress for £25, minus fee of £7.50
