This week The Sun Online revealed it costs 8p to power an electric fan for ten hours while you are sleeping. That’s £30 a year.

With the average price of a unit of energy (kWh) at 17.2p, according to the Government, you can calculate roughly how much your other household appliances set you back each day using this equation: Power of appliance (kilowatts) x time (hours used) x cost of 1kWh (17.2p) = energy cost.

Luckily Katy Docherty has done the maths for you and rounded to the nearest penny.

From fridges to phone chargers – some of these costs may give you a shock.
