Furious Virgin Media broadband customers also complained to the telecoms firm on Twitter.

"No internet. Again" said one user, and another said it was "impossible to get anything done from home".

One angry customer tweeted: "Internet has been up and down all week, but today nothing. I either want it fixed permanently or I want my contract cancelled with no fees."

Virgin's own status page which usually tells customers about any outages or issues is also not working.

Customers were met with a message saying the page was undergoing maintenance "as part of an upgrade to provide you with an even better service".

Virgin Media said on the page: "We're sorry this part of the site isn’t available at the moment. Everything will be back to normal again soon, so please come back and try again shortly."

Hundreds of Virgin Media customers reported an issue according to Down Detector, a website where service issues can be shared and users can see if it's just an issue for them, or more widespread.

The connection issue started at around 9am this morning (July 7) and appeared to be resolved by 10.30am.

It affected broadband only, while other Virgin Media services like mobile and TV do not appear to be down at the same time.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “There is no national outage affecting our services.

"A small number of customers may briefly experience disruption to their broadband services this morning as we carry out planned network upgrade works in their local area.”

Millions of people are still working from home under lockdown rules because of the coronavirus pandemic.
