Best supermarket own-brand wine revealed in blind taste test including £4 bottle from Morrisons
YOU can pick up award winning booze from just £4 from your local supermarket as the top bottles are revealed in a blind taste test.
The winners of this year’s International Wine Challenge competition have been announced and stores like Morrisons and Tesco selling winning tipples.
Thousands of wines from over 50 countries were judged by a panel of international experts in a blind taste test that was run last month.
The best wines have been awarded medals to help consumers make the best choice when shopping.
The competition is in its 38th year and this year UK supermarkets won 591 medals overall, and 430 of them were for own-label wines.
Morrisons alone won 109 of those in total, and Tesco won 108.
Waitrose was also awarded the only gold medal for an own-label sherry with its "Nº1 Fino del Puerto Don Luis".
The wine contest also featured a category highlighting great value award winners where " topped the chart as the best "white wine under £8".

- Paul Mas Réserve Languedoc Blanc 2020, £9.39 - Waitrose
- Pinot Vigilante Central Otago Pinot Noir 2019, £9.99 - Aldi
- Morrisons The Best Amarone 2017, £16 - Morrisons
- Tesco Finest Margaux 2015, £22 - Tesco
- Waitrose & Partners Nº1 Fino del Puerto Don Luis, £11.99 - Waitrose
- Fletchers 40 Year Old Tawny Port, £34.99 - Aldi
Morrisons' £7.25 "The Best Botrytis Semillon" also won the "sweet under £8" award.
But the "Tesco Finest Dessert Semillon" also placed at the top in this category too, £1.25 cheaper than Morrisons' with its £6 wine.
Another Tesco winner was the "Tesco Finest Premier Cru Champagne" which won the "sparkling between £12 and £20" category for the supermarket's £18 entry.
Oz Clarke, a co-chairs for the International Wine Challenge said: "It’s been incredible to witness the progress Great Britain has been making on the world stage for its wine, especially the sparkling wines from southern England."
Following this competition, the "International Wine Challenge champions 2021 winners", which are selected following a re-tasting of all trophy-winning wines, will be revealed at the end of June.
