Take care of your teeth at home with bite-sized tips for your mouth and wallet
HAS toothache got you feeling down in the mouth?
While some dentists may be closed or hard to see, you should still take good care of your teeth at home.
I spoke to Bupa Dental Care dentists Susie Lloyd and Dr Karim Abdel-Khalek for their top tips . . .
BRUSH WISELY: Susie says: “Using an electric toothbrush is the most effective. Their rotating heads help make sure you clean more of your teeth’s surfaces and make it easier to reach tricky spots.”
My tip: Pick up the Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush from Tesco for £20, down from £40 when you use your Clubcard. Comes with two heads.
MAKE A CHANGE: Susie says: “Change your toothbrush every three months. Over time, bristles can splay, and frayed bristles are more abrasive on your gums. For rechargeable toothbrushes, heads should be changed just as frequently.”
My tip: Instead of paying £30 for a pack of eight Oral-B Precision Clean toothbrush heads at Boots, buy a 16-pack of Milos for Braun heads for £6.99 on Amazon. They’re compatible with Oral-B toothbrushes and I can’t tell the difference.
SENSITIVE SUBJECT: Susie says: “If you have a sensitive tooth, reduce sugar in your diet along with any very hot or cold foods. Continue to floss and brush as thoroughly as you can and rub sensitive toothpaste, such as Sensodyne or Colgate Pro-Relief, directly on to the affected area and leave overnight.”
My tip: Sensodyne Daily Care original mint toothpaste (75ml) is on offer at Superdrug for £2, down from £3.49.
PEARLY WHITES: If you’ve upped your coffee intake in lockdown, you may find your teeth aren’t so white any more. Dr Karim says: “Brushing your teeth removes the stains on the surface but it is also important to floss or use interdental brushes to remove the plaque between the teeth. Using a fluoride mouthwash will also help.”
My tip: A bottle of Colgate FluoriGard alcohol-free mouthwash (400ml) is £4.50 at Boots, but I like to use Sainsbury’s Coolmint fluoride mouthwash (500ml) — and that’s just 80p.
