The remaining 800 shops will be staying open for business, and Poundland has said that where stores are closing there is usually another branch open nearby.

The chain has said it hopes to open the "hibernating" stores once this lockdown has ended, bringing employees back out of furlough.

The chain has been allowed to remain open throughout the coronavirus pandemic because it sells essential products such as food and medicine.

However, these times may be busier, so you could be forced to wait in queues. Councils are limiting the numbers of people allowed in shops due to Covid-19.

What restrictions does Poundland have in place?

Shops and supermarkets have been asked to reinforce rules around mask-wearing and social distancing.

Unless you are medically exempt, you should make sure you take a mask and wear it in store.

From today, Poundland told The Sun that it will be placing greeters at the front of its shops to remind customers they need to wear a mask in store.

Free masks will be given if customers need one.
