WHAT A PORKER

Aldi is selling its own version of Percy Pigs for half the price

ALDI is now selling its own version of Marks & Spencer’s Percy Pigs - but they're just 85p a bag.

Leo The Lions are the budget supermarket’s version of the iconic gummies and they are at MORE THAN HALF the price.

The big cat has green ears rather than pink, but that appears to be the only real difference.

Like Percy Pigs, Leos are free from animal gelatin and bargain-hunters just can’t get enough.

Delighted shopper Danielle Robertson tweeted: “Aldi’s Leo the Lion sweets are elite. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Percy Pigs.”

Customer Jason Kiernan added: This is not a drill people… @Aldi are stocking Veggie ‘Leo The Lion’ chewy fruit gums which are very similar to another sweet from a supermarket I won’t mention…if not nicer.”

While veggie Beth Southern said: “Aldi’s new Percy Pig knockoffs are epic!! And gelatin free!”

A 170g bag of Leo The Lions cost just 85p and contains 588 calories.

This compares to a 170g bag of Percy Pigs, priced at £2.10 and containing the identical number of calories.

That means Aldi’s sweets work out at 50p per 100g, while Marks & Spencer’s are just over £1.23 per 100g - 143 per cent more.

Aldi began trialling Leo The Lions at the end of last year in areas including Southampton in Hants, Kidderminster in the West Mids and Bromsgrove, Worcs.

They have now been rolled out nationwide after shoppers snapped them up.

Leos are described on the jungle-themed packs as ‘Roarsome chewy fruit gums’ and contain the real juice from fruits including apricots, apples and cherries.

Packs also sport the vegan ‘leaf’ logo.

And if that isn’t enough to get to get sweet fans racing to the purse-friendly supermarket, Aldi is also selling its own take on Marks & Spencer’s Colin The Caterpillar gummies too.

Like Leo, Wendy The Worms are also sold in 170g bags for 85p and are also vegan.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “Both lines of sweets (Leo The Lions and Wendy The Worms) are available in all stores now.

“Both are vegan and feature the vegan logo – Aldi does not offer a gelatin-based alternative.”

This is not the first time Aldi has brought out sweets to rival Brits’ favourites.

Last year, the supermarket launched its own bags of copycat mini Oreo, Creme Egg, Kinder Bueno and Cadbury Caramel mini eggs for just £2.

A few months later, Aldi began selling its own version of M&Ms too.

Still available to buy in branches nationwide, Choc Ums come in three flavours - peanut, chocolate and crispy, just like the leading Mars Wrigley brand.

But rather than forking out around £1.50 in for smaller bags in rival supermarkets, including Tesco and Sainsbury's, Aldi shoppers can pick up a 140g pouch for just 79p.

Last year, Poundland launched a knock-off version of M&S' Percy Pigs but they're shaped like DOGS instead.

And last month, M&S launched Percy Pig ice cream and it tastes of marshmallows.

Last year, The Sun revealed how M&S sneakily turned all Percy Pig sweets vegetarian by removing pork gelatine.
