It could come in handy as many have cut their own hair during the coronavirus lockdown.

Hairdressers were forced to close in March due to the pandemic, but work is now underway to help them safely reopen.

But it requires the UK to pass five tests, which includes making sure that any lockdown easing doesn’t risk a second wave of cases.

In a new 50-page plan published today, the Government also unveiled a range of social distancing measures for salons and other venues.

What are the five tests?

THE UK needs to pass the below tests before lockdown measures are eased.

  1. NHS capacity to provide critical care and specialist treatment
  2. Sustained and consistent fall in daily deaths
  3. Rate of infection decreasing to manageable levels
  4. Enough testing and PPE capacity to be able to meet future demand
  5. Confident a change in lockdown measures won’t spark a second wave of coronavirus cases

It confirmed Dominic Raab’s announcement that pubs, restaurants and hairdressers will not open until July 4 at “the earliest”.

It means those hoping for a visit will have to wait until the final stage of the Government’s new three-phase plan.

To safely reopen hairdressers, the Government will also phase in businesses, beginning with pilots to test whether it’s possible for them to open even partially.

Venues that are naturally crowded and where it would be hard to practice social distancing will have to remain closed until it’s safe enough to reopen them.

Ministers have previously feared that hairdressers will have to remain shut for six more months, as scientists had found no safe way for salons to reopen.

More specific details of what rules hairdressers will need to follow will be released closer to the time, and only if phase one and two are successful.

Phase one begins today, with businesses including construction firms and those in food production being encouraged to go back to work from today.

The second phase will be to get children back into classrooms, starting with primary school kids.

National Hairdressers’ Federation chief executive Hilary Hall told it supports the Government’s decision to reopen but are concerned about “challenges of working in close proximity”.

She added: “We urgently need clarification about what kind of PPE is required.

“We are working with the Government to provide clear guidelines so salons can return to work safely when the time is right.”
